Ghana Institute of Languages Admission Requirements

The Authority of Ghana Institute of Languages (GIL) has released the GIL Admission Entry Requirements for prospective candidates that seek admission into the institution for the 2023/2024 academic year.

These requirements are for various programmes offered in the institution, it serves as a guide in the application process. All interested applicants are to read through carefully making sure that they fulfill the requirements before putting in an application.

Our Schools

Currently, the Ghana Institute of languages has three schools:

  • School of Languages(SOL)
  • School of Translators(SOT)
  • School of Bilingual Secretaryship(SOBS)

THE SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES

The School of Languages has since the inception of the Institute carried out its original mandate of teaching international languages to enhance Pan-Africanism and cordial relationship between Ghanaians and other nationals. The languages currently taught are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

THE SCHOOL OF TRANSLATORS

The School of Translators was started in 1964. Currently, the School is affiliated with the University of Ghana and awards the Bachelor of Arts in Translation. It trains professional translators. In addition, the training gives experience in the general principles of conference interpreting thereby preparing graduates for positions in such organizations as the United Nations Organization (UNO), the Africa Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and other organizations that organize international conferences. At the end of their training, graduates have high proficiency in English and French and a third international language selected from the other international languages taught at the Institute.

THE SCHOOL OF BILINGUAL SECRETARYSHIP

The Diploma in Bilingual Secretaryship programme was begun in 1974. Its aim was to meet the growing need for secretaries that have proficiency in both English and French. Now, it is a three-year programme which is affiliated to the National Board for Professional and Technician Examination (NABPTEX) which awards the Higher National Diploma.

TRANSBUREAU SERVICES

The Ghana Institute of Languages offers translation services to clients at all its campuses.

BRANCHES AND CAMPUSES

The main campus is at Adabraka on the Education Link. It shares a block with the University of Ghana, City Campus. There is a second campus at East Legon, near the University of Professional Studies. The Institute has a branch each in Kumasi. This branch is cited close to the Kumasi Technical University. This branch was opened in January 1969. The Kumasi branch runs both the language programmes and the HND Bilingual Secretaryship programme. In addition, it has pilot campuses at Sunyani and Takoradi for teaching a special programme in Arabic for academic purposes to teachers of Arabic. There is another branch in Tamale. It is on the Education Ridge. This branch runs the language programmes and the special Arabic for academic purposes programme at satellite campuses at Bawku, Wa and Walewale.

Ghana Institute of Languages Admission Requirements 2023/2024.

Our regular academic programmes are in two semesters of 16weeks

School of Bilingual Secretaryship (SOBS)

Admission to the school of SOBS is accessible to holders of:
a) Senior High School Certificate with credits in English, French, Mathematics and 2 other subjects, or
b) G.C.E “O” Level/West Africa School Certificate with credits in five (5) subjects including English, French and Mathematics and three(3) G.C.E ‘A’ level passes including English and French, Or
c) Baccalaureat série A

The duration of the course is three years.

Students of SOBS graduate with the Higher National in Bilingual Secretaryship after a three year intensive course. Products of the School get ready employment in Ghana and abroad since they are well armed as bilingual secretaries. The academic curriculum includes English Language, French Language, English Typing and Shorthand, French Typing and Shorthand, Computer Studies, Law, Accounting, Commercial French, Introduction To translation, Business Organization and economics.

School of Translators (SOT)

The SOT is located in the headquarters, Accra
Admission requirements here include:
a) Senior High School Certificate with ‘C / B3′ in French and English. Credit in Social Studies and a credit in three other subjects,
Or
b) G.C.E “O” Level/West Arica School Certificate with credits in five (5)subjects including English, French and three G.C.E passes at the Advanced Level: French, Literature in English, and General Paper,
Or
c) Baccalaureat série A4
Success in a competitive entrance examination,
Or
d) University Degree in modern languages including French.
Or
e) Mature students: applicants must be 27 years old and above

Students are required to spend one year abroad for language immersion. Anglophones go to the University of Benin while Francophones spend the year in the United Kingdom. Or any approved Anglophone country Students of the School of Translators graduate with a B.A Translation in English, French and a third language chosen from among Arabic, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

The duration of the course is four years for holders of SSSCE/ A’ Level, three years for Baccalauret holders or B.A Degree in languages without a third language, and two years for holders of B.A degree in languages with a third language
